Viagra is a prescription drug developed by Pfizer, Inc. for treating male impotency (Erectile Dysfunction).
Its pharmacological name is Sildenafil Citrate. Approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, it is now the major treatment for male impotence.

Viagra increases the body's ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Sexual stimulus is still required for erection to occur. Viagra doesn't produce spontaneous erections and doesn't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.

Viagra is taken orally in the form of a tablet about one hour before sexual activity. It is absorbed into the bloodstream where it functions as an inhibitor to an enzyme, phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), found primarily in the penis. This enzyme breaks down cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP is produced during sexual stimulation, leading to penis erection. The longer the cyclic GMP exists, the greater the chance for increased blood flow to the penis, thereby generating an erection.

The half-life is approximately 4 hours. It is recommended that sexual stimulation commence from 30 to 60 minutes after Viagra is taken.

There will be no erection and Sildenafil, or Viagra, will be excreted as metabolites from the body in bowel movements and urine.

The general success rate of Viagra is about 75 - 80% for males with Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

Viagra, Cialis and Levitra all act on the body in similar ways. Each drug is claimed to have advantages over the other. For example, Cialis is claimed to last 8 times longer in the body than Viagra. Only use Viagra if it has been prescribed by a qualified physician. You must tell your doctor exactly what other medications you are taking. FDA regulations only allow Viagra to be purchased with a physician's prescription.

If you buy Viagra from an unlicenced pharmacy that offers Viagra without a prescription you may be conned. The pills may not be genuine viagra and your credit card details may be stolen.

For those patients who have been prescribed Viagra by their doctors, Viagra should only be taken once per day, about 1 hour before sexual activity.

Many doctors recommend that Viagra treatment begins with the minimum 25mg dose. The standard dose is 50mg. Dosages higher than 100mg per day are NOT recommended.
